Restaurant Review: Cravin' Cajun, Novotel Al Barsha
INFO: 7pm-11.30pm, Novotel Dubai Al Barsha, Sheikh Zayed Road, 04 304 9000
Two words: chicken and waffles. If you’re obsessed with US food shows focused on diners, drive-ins and dives, you’ll have come across mentions of this famed combination. The health-conscious half of me was appalled at the devilish pairing of fried, savoury and sweet, but the glutton was eager to get involved. And I’ll never look back! The meal features buttermilk-marinated fried chicken breast, cornbread waffles, spicy maple syrup, fried cabbage, mashed potato and smoked turkey gravy – and it literally coats every taste bud you possess. Tender chicken, crunchy waffles, deeply savoury gravy and the occasional slick of sweetness and kick of spicy cabbage – it’s a lot to take in, but somehow well balanced.
In fact, all the dishes are quite a mouthful, from the smoky gumbo to the crispy battered shrimp, meaty crab cakes and – not for the faint-hearted – the pastry-wrapped brie with caramel pecan sauce. Go there ready to indulge and you’ll leave with a big smile on your face. This is not the place for dieters, but there’s no compromise on quality – everything is prepared under the guidance of the lovable Chef Jeffrey, a Louisiana native. Cravin’ Cajun is certainly unique on Dubai’s food scene, and with live music and great cocktails, it’s an all-round fantastic night out.
