Restaurant Review: Cocktail Kitchen, JLT
Mediterranean cuisine and cutting-edge drinks make for a top night out
Any team brave enough to use feta cheese as a cocktail ingredient is worthy of review; when they somehow get the recipe to work, they deserve a standing ovation. This accolade goes to the staff at Cocktail Kitchen, a cool new concept where the drinks are on equal billing with the food.
On arrival, I was invited to spend some time at the Tasting Table, a brass altar where fruits, spices, herbs, and, yes, even cheese, are all sacrificed in the making of quirky cocktails. It’s a joy to watch.
After polishing off my Salted Sidecar, I was escorted to my dinner table, taking in the industrial chic surrounds – stone, steel and laminated concrete cement this place’s urban vibe. The well-informed staff – full of easy chat and laughs – seem like they’ve been transported from some on-trend eatery in London’s Shoreditch.
I admit I was concerned the food wouldn’t live up to the drinks, but I needn’t have worried. Vibrant full-flavoured Mediterranean dishes fill the menu: crispy octopus with chorizo and tomato caviar; beef carpaccio with balsamic emulsion and beetroot chips; anis-poached salmon with roasted fennel; tortellini with porcini, Portobello and truffle… Robust, well-balanced and perfectly cooked, every bite was a delight.
