Lebanese food is typically vegetarian-friendly, but Awtar is an herbivore’s paradise. Some of the freshest fruit and vegetables in the UAE can be found on the restaurant’s tables, and we could easily have made a meal out of nothing but crisp, cold veggies. For starters, diners are brought a huge bowl full of vegetables, overflowing with whole orange peppers, radishes and lettuce leaves. We were told that it’s a Lebanese tradition to start with fresh veg, and we didn’t feel a shred of guilt when we polished off all the cherry tomatoes before dinner started.

For seafood lovers, the seafood salad is a great twist on traditional starters, with crab meat sprinkled generously on top. If you want some meat with your greens, the mixed grill is done very well, with the garlic-infused lamb kebab winning as our personal favourite. To end the night, save yourself some calories and choose the fresh fruit plate. Everything we said about the veg applies to the fruit too! The restaurant has live music and a belly dancer, but what we loved most were the ceilings, which are high and tented with rippling white cloth.
