Fed up with playing second best to Brad, heartbroken John calls it quits

JOHN MAYER was on the verge of proposing to on-off girlfriend JENNIFER ANISTON this week, say pals, but instead the heartbroken singer has been forced to call time on their relationship, after Jen made a series of frank confessions about her ex BRAD PITT in a shocking new interview.

Crushed and dejected
Speaking to a UK mag, Jen reportedly crushed John by gushing, “I will love Brad for the rest of my life – you can’t take away good memories.” Adding, “I don’t regret any of that time with Brad… They were seven very intense years together, and it was beautiful and complicated.”

And her frank admission came just as John was gearing up to pop the question to Jen, with a pal revealing he’d already chosen the ring.

“Money is no object for John. He’s creating a vintage-style classic ring for Jen,” a pal revealed before the break-up. “He’s looking at an 18-carat flawless diamond, so he won’t get much change from [Dhs10million]”. Adding, “He knows a ring like that would be hard to refuse.”

‘Can’t compete’
But as Jen opened up about her ex – who co-designed an elaborate Silvia Damiani engagement ring for her back in 1999 – the harsh reality that he could never compete dawned on a devastated John, who reluctantly made the difficult decision to end it.

“John believed that he and Jen were finally on the same page, and he was excited by the prospect of spending the rest of their lives together,” revealed a close pal. “To hear her publicly admit that she still loved Brad was a painfully harsh wake-up call for him.”

And another friend adds, “He broke up with her when she got back from Europe.”

Barbed dig

John – who has always believed himself to be the right man for Jen – suffered a severe ego-bashing, as a result of Jen’s recent revelation – “I want to be happy and loved, and not settling for something I think is second best and less than I deserve.”

A reeling John believed Jen was echoing the sentiments of her close friends, Courteney Cox and David Arquette – who have made no secret of the fact that they don’t think John is good enough for Jen.

And, though he refused to comment on the split, John – in what’s being seen as a joke about his bad rep among Jen’s friends – wrote on his Twitter site, “I just voted on People [magazine’s] ‘Is John Mayer a keeper?’ poll. I clicked ‘Love Him’ but ‘Lose Him’ is winning at 63 per cent.”

No happy ending

John’s also reportedly had difficulty accepting Jennifer’s recent admission that she wants to have Brad back in her life.

“I really do hope that we’ll be good friends again at some point,” Jen revealed about her ex-husband.

But sources close to the musician have insisted that the idea that Brad could be hanging around in the background as the pair start their married life together was just too much for John – and his ego! – to take.
