The fastest pilots in the world prepare to navigate the nylon pylons this weekend

The 2015 Red Bull Air Race kicks off its 2015 season this weekend, and if you're anywhere near the seafront at Abu Dhabi and have the ability to look upwards, you won't be able to miss it. One of the major sporting events in the UAE sporting calendar, it's a high-pressure aviation race that tests the ability of the world's best pilots to the absolute limit.

The rules of this two-day event are simple; pilots jump into their high-performance aerobatic planes on Day 1 for the qualification rounds and navigate a course of air gates - 25 metres-tall nylon markers spaced as little as ten metres apart. There's penalties and disqualifications for misdemenours, so there's more to it than just hammering it round the track. The 12 best flyers move on to the actual races on Day 2, with a series of knockout rounds until they're whittled down to a final four.

Just like last year, the aerial action will be taking place over the deep blue waters of the Arabian Gulf's, but this time there's a brand new race village - a purpose-built facility right on the Corniche breakwater. With a clear view of the racing, set against the UAE capital's impressive skyline, it's guaranteed to be one of the most extraordinary sports events you'll see in the country this year.
