Iftars are available in abundance this month, but what sets Jason Atherton’s critically acclaimed Marina Social apart is the special Ramadan set menu. Instead of the usual buffet iftar experience, this menu eases those breaking their fast with a touch of juxtaposing flavours to your table.

As we arrive, we’re shown through the dimly lit restaurant to our table, by the window. As Dubai weather has reached almost melting point, the outdoor terrace is sadly closed. We’re handed the set menu, which consists of four choices per course; providing vegetarian, seafood and meat options for each.

To start, we choose the seared yellowfin tuna and duck leg salad. The fish is light and complements the crunchy apple slaw texture well, while the dressed duck salad is a taste sensation.

We share main courses and are given quirky crockery reinforcing Atherton’s ‘deformalised fine dining’ concept which he embeds into all his Social restaurants around the world.

The short rib and seabass arrives in all its glory, with the waiter pouring the tomato and lemongrass fondue over. The dish is accompanied by a velvety jus, but our favourite accompaniment is the pulled-beef filled Yorkshire pudding. Creamy pomme puree and honey glazed carrots sprinkled with crushed pine nuts create a delectable explosion of flavours that we savour with every bite. The steamed seabass is light and fluffy; still full of flavour, but simpler and perfect for those who don’t want to break their fast with a heavy meal.

Dessert consists of light and fluffy baked vanilla madeleines, which come with a selection of sweet dips: crème Chantilly, cherry jam and dark chocolate. Our favourite is the cherry jam, which added a little extra sweetness balancing out the light texture of the madeleines. The second dessert is white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry and thyme jam. This time a sweet and sour experience, with the herby hues from the thyme creating an unusual and dainty combination, which provides the perfect end to our course.

We recommend this Ramadan special set menu for those looking to break their fast in a different but chic way.
