In many cities, seeing pink, purple, green and blue heads bobbing along the street is pretty much the norm. Here in the UAE, however, sporting alternative hair shades is still a relatively new trend, and one that I’m super excited about. So much so, I have dipped my tips to try it out. I’m no stranger to fun hair colours. I have tried every shade from pretty pink to sea green. But multi-shades? Hmm...
Rainbow hair has come a long way since simple solo washes of pink and lilac. Beauty’s fave new way to trial the trend is to create a multi-faceted vibe using a variety of shades. Think juicy pastel peach with rose pink highlights or Shoshanna from GIRLS’ punchy fuchsia roots.
I pop into Dubai’s coolest nail salon, We Nails, to find out more. We Nails is a home-grown salon, owned by Neda, aka one of the loveliest ladies ever. The salon’s resident colourist and stylist, Harriet Slade, agrees to take on the challenge of transforming my parched, bleached locks. First she lightens my roots with bleach, using Olaplex to protect it from damage. Once the bleach is rinsed, Harriet paints a deep ashy-lilac shade to tone and temporarily colour my newly iced roots. After 15 minutes, she works peach melba temporary colour through the rest of my hair before adding extra pink to “grab” individual strands. The result? A multi-toned, super-pretty rainbow of peach and pink with purple faux roots. Very clever. I love the grunge-feel of the soft roots teamed with the pretty pastel ends.
Harriet spilled the goss on the UAE’s most exciting new hair trend…
Have you noticed a rise in the number of people seeking alternative hair colours?
Yes. It’s been slow but there is definitely more interest now. When I colour bloggers like DesertTwins and SheidaFashionista, I get a lot of people contacting me via Instagram.
What’s the most popular shade?
Soft, pastel pink. It’s also the most flattering shade because it looks great on most skin tones.
Do you have a fave style that you love to do?
I always enjoy balayage, but I really love getting creative with colours. Anything vibrant. I’m currently really into playing with colours at the roots. Reverse ombre!
Hair-wise, what products and tools do you rate?
