Qatar's New Hamad International Airport
Now that the new airport is open, there is some good news and some bad news!
The good news is that gradually more and more carriers are starting to use this site. Etihad Airways, Kuwait Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines and Royal Jordanian will start flying in and out of Hamad International Airport this Wed 14 May.
At the moment the following airlines are also using the new airport; Air Arabia, Air India Express, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, FlyDubai, Iran Air, Nepal Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Syrian Air and Yemenia and more airlines are planned to operate in the next ten days.
Our beloved Qatar Airways will fly from HIA on from Tue 27 May. Once all carriers move over to HIA at the end of May, the DIA’s runways and facilities are expected to be used by Gulf Helicopters and the Qatar Aeronautical College.
However, the bad news is that only two cafes in HIA and a few Qatar Duty Free outlets are open. 80 shops and 30 eateries are supposed to be ready within the next few weeks – but don’t hold your breath, as we all know this airport was supposed to open in 2009!
