The FIFA World Cup normally takes place in the summer months, but this could change when the tournament is hosted by Qatar in 2022.
A meeting of the FIFA executive committee will be held in October to determine whether the soccer tournament, which takes place every four years, will be moved from the country’s unbearably hot summer months to the cooler winter.
In December 2010, Qatar beat the likes of the United States, Japan and Australia to host the World Cup in 2022. However, summer temperatures in Qatar can regularly rise above 40 degrees celsius.
As well as a possible re-schedule, in order to combat the searing heat the World Cup organising committee are working on developing stadium air-cooling technology which would reduce field-level temperatures to 27 Celsius.
