Qatar’s Aspiring Designers Take Front Stage

Qatar’s next wave of would-be fashion designers will put their talent under the spotlight during a series of shows this April at The Gate Mall.

Hosted by Salam, Center Front will take place from 15 to 17 April to showcase designs from students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, including seniors presenting collections in a bid to launch successful careers.

The annual VCUQatar fashion show, now in its fifteenth year, is traditionally a sold-out event. Seeking seats on the frow will be a who’s who of the Doha fashion industry, from magazine fashion writers to bloggers, stylistas and buyers keen to spot the next big thing in what is becoming an increasingly competitive local market.

And there’s a question mark over whether this year’s show will include a guest star designer, as in previous years. Last year, the show featured New York designer Eric Gaskins, known for his beautifully crafted dresses worn by celeb clients such as Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek.

The 2013 show, titled Fingerprint, was noteworthy for the eclectic mix that student designers sent down the runway, from floaty tops and pants inspired by traditional Indian clothing to neon bright separates with a sense of cheeky fun.

INFO: The show is open to the public on Tuesday 15 April, Wednesday 16 April and Thursday 17 April, starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are QR50, available from www.qatar.vcu.edu. Seating opens at 5:30pm and concludes promptly at 6:20pm. Seating is on a first come, first seated basis. For more info, call 4402 0555 or visit www.qatar.vcu.edu
