OSSIANO, ATLANTIS, THE PALM, DUBAI
With a vast floor-to-ceiling aquarium for a view, this restaurant offers the illusion of subaqueous dining at blow-the-budget prices. For special occasions you can pay Dhs1,500 to have a scuba diver swim in front of your table and present a message on a board to your guest. We assume “will you marry me” is a popular choice.
Unlike in most seafood restaurants, the marine life in the tank is not for eating. Diners are presented with a fish chart – don’t mistake it for a menu. It’s provided to help patrons identify the different species on show, from shark to grouper.
Pickle fans will be pleased. If you can eat it, you can pickle it – at least that seems to be the conclusion the chefs at Ossiano have reached. King crab is served with pickled melon, foie gras is served with pickled apricot and oysters are served with pickled cucumber.
Feeling flush? Caviar starts at Dhs1,410 for 30g. It comes with blinis, chopped egg, crème fraiche, shallots, capers and cornichons, but at that price you shouldn’t crowd the taste – put the onion and pickles aside and let the natural flavours of the roe flow.
