La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz L shows the card saying Moonlight won the best picture

This year’s Academy Awards ended with what could be argued to be one of the biggest mistakes in Oscars history. At the end of the ceremony, the cast of La La Land took to the stage to collect the award for the coveted Best Picture….when the award was really won by Moonlight.

Veteran Hollywood stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were tasked with the job of announcing the Best Picture Oscar, and after naming La La Land as the winner, the musical’s cast, including Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and director David Chazelle, took to the stage to collect the gong and make a speech. Only then was it shockingly revealed that a mistake had been made and Moonlight was actually the winner of the category.

One of the producers of La La Land, Jordan Horowitz, showed the audience the card with Moonlight named as the winner and said: “This is not a joke, Moonlight has won Best Picture.” And so, in an incredibly awkward few moments, the cast of Moonlight, including Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali, went on stage as the La La Land cast shuffled back off.

Attempting to explain how the mistake had happened, Beatty told the audience and host Jimmy Kimmel: "I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land," He continued: "That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at Jimmy. I wasn’t trying to be funny." PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm responsible for tallying the votes, then released a statement about the furore: “We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when [it was] discovered, [it] was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.” What we want to know is: how many people have been fired in the aftermath?!

The Big Winners!

Casey Affleck and Emma Stone continued their winning streak

The biggest gongs of the night went to Casey Affleck, who won Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea, Emma Stone, who won Best Actress for La La Land, Mahershala Ali who won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight and Viola Davis who won Best Supporting Actress for Fences. As his name was called out, Casey was bear-hugged by big brother Ben, who himself has two Oscars to his name. Ah, sibling love.

Kidman Can’t Clap?

Nicole received a roasting on social media

Not only did Nicole Kidman walk away from the Oscars empty-handed after losing out to Viola Davis in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Lion, but she also received a roasting on Twitter after viewers made fun of her clapping technique. Yes, you read that right. Accused of looking like a seal when she applauded in the audience, social media users asked: “Why does Nicole Kidman clap her hands like that? Weird. Clap like a normal person.” Poor Nic.

Best Bus Tour Ever!

Unsuspecting fans got a front-row ticket to Hollywood’s hottest event

Most tourists who undertake the open-deck Hollywood bus tour hope to spot a few celebrity mansions and, at best, perhaps glimpse an A-list star. However, Oscars presenter Jimmy Kimmel made a lot of dreams come true when he organised for a busload of fans to arrive at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles where the Academy Awards were taking place. Armed with selfie sticks and cameras, a group of gobsmacked tourists were escorted into the star-studded auditorium, where, much to their shock, they got to meet some of Hollywood’s elite. Jennifer Aniston even handed over a pair of designer glasses to one fan as a gift. Where do we buy our tickets?

Mane Attraction

Halle Berry's curls stole the show

Halle Berry is well-known for her trademark pixie hairstyle that she’s rocked for years, but the actress turned heads on the Oscars red carpet with a full head of curls! Of her big hair, the 2001 Best Actress winner said: “With this look, I celebrate my natural hair by allowing it to be wild and free.” Twitter, however, was divided over her decision, with some comparing her to a “vintage Whitney Houston”, and others to the Bride of Frankenstein. Ouch!

Chrissy’s Nap Time

Teigen caught sleeping during ceremony

It appears that the excitement of the Academy Awards was too much for Chrissy Teigen, who was caught seemingly catching a nap not once, but twice throughout the ceremony. Doubt she’ll nab herself a ticket for next year’s show!
