My Life on a Plate: Simone Heng

Before we get started, the bubbly and petite  Simone has a little fast food confession to make to Gourmet – she’s a, “massive sucker for McDonald’s chicken nugget Happy Meals!” But she admits that it’s only when she’s super busy – and that she gives the toys to (fellow Virgin host) Louie’s little ones. Simone, you’re not alone on that one.

McD’s aside, her favourite foodie experience is dining at Bu Qtair Cafeteria – the Jumeriah beachside shack that serves deliciously simple, made-to-order seafood. “I recently went with friends; brought my picnic blankets and we collected our fish and parathas and ate in front of the Burj Al Arab. It was fab and very un-Dubai,” she says.

So we know what she likes, but what are Simone’s pet peeves when it comes to food? “I try and avoid them but they’re everywhere – the ‘Chindian’ food joints where Chinese food is cooked with an Indian twist. Things like chicken Manchurian and plastic-like spring rolls sold in combo packs. You couldn’t pay me to eat it!” What you will have no problem convincing her to eat, though, is sweets. She confesses, “I love sweets! I have a soft spot for scones with clotted cream and any sort of hot toffee or caramel pudding with a side of custard or ice cream. Mmmm.”

7.30am
I have breakfast after my run and shower. This is normally All-Bran or muesli with skimmed milk, berries, a small drizzle of honey and some almonds too.

1.15pm
Lunch is normally after I get off my show, The Lowdown. Lunchtime radio is tough for hunger! I eat in the Virgin office and I bring food from home; mostly something Asian because it’s the easiest for me to cook. I make a meal with loads of spinach, some oyster sauce, noodles, fish and other veg with ginger and garlic – something that’s really simple and microwaveable for work.

3.30pm
In the mid-afternoon I snack on some fruit salad with a drizzle of honey.

6.30pm
My dinner is normally really clean: spinach, snow peas, mushrooms and fish with very little sauce and no carbs. During the course of the day I sip on Detox Tea from Detox Delight. It’s got loads of nutrients and just helps keep me feeling clean inside. My diet is very good at the moment because I have just come off a detox – just juices and soups – so I have to ease carbs back into my diet, but I do intend on continuing with loads of veggies and less carbs. From November to June, my diet is pretty bad because I get so busy but I can’t rely on my fast Eurasian metabolism for the rest of my life.
