Robert Downey Jr stars in this tense courtroom drama

With two Hollywood heavyweights in the lead roles, one would expect The Judge to pack a punch both at the box office and onscreen.

Robert Downey Jr stars as big-city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home when his estranged father, the town’s judge, played by Oscar winner Robert Duvall, is accused of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and, along the way, reconnects with the family members he walked away from years before.

The movie also stars Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga – you may remember her from Up in the Air and horror flick The Conjuring. Also on the bill are Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Jeremy Strong (Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln), Dax Shephard (TV’s Parenthood), and Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade, Friday Night Lights).

Other names to look out for include Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners), Leighton Meester, Ken Howard, Emma Tremblay (Elysium), Balthazar Getty, David Krumholtz (This is the End), Sarah Lancaster (TV’s Chuck), Grace Zabriskie (Big Love) and Denis O’Hare from True Blood.

The film is directed by David Dobkin, who was also behind Wedding Crashers, although The Judge is a far more sombre affair.
