Designer Tracy Heaven reveals the gorgeous Moontide Spring Summer 2012 collection and her liberating style credo

The bold and
beautiful designs of Moontide swimwear's Spring Summer 2012 collection have
made a splash on the international swimwear scene. Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek,
Cindy Crawford and Kate Beckinsale are among the celebs who're fans, and exclusive
Middle East retailer Bare Essentials has been finding out more about the woman
behind it all – designer Tracy Heaven.

London born but now a staunch New Zealander after
emigrating 14 years ago, Tracy is the inspiration behind Moontide’s iconic designs.
Her career spans everything from high street fashion and knitwear to underwear
and swimwear. She first began slogging it as a young fashion designer in a London
Soho basement supplying fast fashion to Miss Selfridge, Top Shop and later
designing beaded evening wear for Harrods, which involved regular travel to
India. Tracy describes this as “a steep and fast learning curve into the
realities of real world design where deadlines somewhat differ from those at design
college and I hardly saw the light of day.”

Talking recently to Pamela Scott, Editor of The Swimwear
Yearbook & Underlines Magazine
, Tracy recalled, “My interest in fashion and
design came from my mother who had an amazing sense of style though she
couldn’t even sew on a button! It was my dad who taught me to sew on a hand
operated Singer machine.” From these early creative experiences, she has taken
her passion for design onto new levels over the years culminating in her role
as head designer for Bendon lingerie.

Her passion for designing swimwear that feels amazing on
the body and also shows off innovative style is a part of her design philosophy
and she says she has Moontide to thank for ‘liberating’ her from the challenges
of detailed lingerie design despite loving the intricacy of this experience
across several global fashion labels.

 “When I emigrated from
the UK out to New Zealand I was thrilled to find such an evolutionary approach
to fashion on this side of the world and fell in love with the whole Moontide
ethos of helping every women find total beach confidence. To me it’s such a
progressive and inspirational brand with a truly international appeal having
grown from its New World inception. So, when I was given the opportunity to join
the team it was the realization of a dream,” she explains.

Tracy’s experience through lingerie design, coupled with
her passion for matching edgy style with luxurious comfort and fit, has seen Moontide
become the leading cup size manufacturer in Australasia and regarded today as a
swimwear innovator across the industry. All the garments are designed using top
quality, hand finished, Italian micro-fibre fabrics which ensure luxurious
comfort, colour vibrancy and after wear durability. All the hardware is
nickel-free and heat tested.

Included in the Spring Summer 2011-12 collection is the tribal
beat ‘story’ which includes the pocahontas range made from block-colour, sueded
animal skin textures with Native American tassles and fringe embellishments to
complete the look. This unique fabric is ten times more chlorine resistant than
traditional swimwear fabrics, dries twice as fast as conventional beachwear and
has a UV protection factor of UPF 50+.
