In an attempt to raise awareness on underprivileged adolescents across America, Miley Cyrus brought a rather unusual date to accompany her to the MTV Video Music Awards that took place on 24 August. She pretended for Jesse Helt, a homeless youth, to be her new boyfriend as they walked down the red carpet together.
Seems like him going out and showing his face on TV was not the best of ideas, as Helt is wanted by police in his native Oregon for a probation violation. A warrant is out for his arrest, in relation to previous charges of criminal trespassing and criminal mischief, according to an Eonline report.
The pop star's new 22-year old friend, whom she met at the Hollywood shelter My Friend's Place last week, was also arrested and charged with burglary in 2010 after allegedly attempting to break into an Oregon apartment. Court documents further mention how Helt is accused of ignoring the terms of his freedom by failing to be in regular contact with his probation officer, breaking his curfew and skipping out on his community service sentence.
Helt's true identity was exposed when Cyrus sent him onstage to accept the Video of the Year Moonman trophy for Wrecking Ball for her. The youngster gave a heartfelt speech: "My name is Jesse, and I'm accepting this award on behalf of 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving lost and scared right now. I know this because I am one of these people. I have survived in shelters all over this city... Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."
Jesse Helt might have a portion of new found fame, but we are guessing the buzz about him will get him into serious trouble. Worth going to the VMS's with Miley?
