Meet Lady Gaga's Sister
So controversial is Lady Gaga that, what with her prosthetic horns, meat couture and grand gimmicks, it’s hard to remember she is actually a human being, so when Natali Germanotta – her 19-year-old sister – recently came on to the scene it gave us a reality check. What on earth is it like to be related to the wacky artist? We decided to find the truth behind the Addams Family-esque allusions...
Stefani (Gaga) and Natali are the only children of Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta and are of French Italian descent. Encouraged to follow their creative instincts both sisters not only share the same looks – the resemblance is striking – they also both boast incredible artistic flair. Natali said, “Ever since we were kids, my parents gave us the freedom to be ourselves.”
However, while she enjoyed a brief foray in the music world with a small cameo role in her sister’s Telephone video, Natali has decided to forge her own path as a fashion designer. Studying at the famous Parsons The New School Of Design, the 19-year-old is already causing a stir in the industry with sartorial big wigs like former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld already a fan.
From the get-go it’s obvious that Natali is the most sensible of the two. Discussing her studies she revealed she steers away from the usual boozy student antics, insisting, “For me, college is less about getting drink and more about learning what you need for your career.” Meanwhile her big sis once boasted about keeping in shape while on the alcohol diet.
With her subtle style and shy exterior Natali is the wallflower, but that’s how she likes it. She prefers to be in the shadows of her sisters’ mega-fame and certainly wouldn’t dare cash in on Gaga’s celebrity to give her a head start in her own career.
“For now I’d like to stay at my school,” she said, again revealing her rational sign – she doesn’t want to be fast-tracked she wants to make it on her own.
Though that’s not to say Gaga hasn’t helped at all. The giant shoe-shaped piano she played on during The Oprah Winfrey Show was a replica of a shoe Natali made for a school project. She recalled, “I was at my parents house sobbing, ‘oh my god’.”
Lady Gaga also proudly attended her sister’s high school graduation? Though she did so in a grand manner, wearing a skin-coloured body suit embellished with rhinestones. While many would be angry at such a blatant upstaging, Natali explains she prefers it that way, insisting, “She asked me, ‘Should I dress really conservative and look not like myself, or should I do it over-the-top and freak everybody out?’ And I was like, ‘The latter, definitely the latter.’”
Adding of the schools reaction, “The teachers were like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t handle this family.”
Her sister’s fashion is a contentious matter with Natali, who claims she doesn’t want to be part of the Haus of Gaga simply because her sister wears too many outfits – “She changes 50 times a day!”
However, Natali and Lady Gaga are working together on a fashion line for the public and rumour has it the collection will be ‘normal’.
A source said, “Gaga came up with the idea of remodelling the styles of classic icons from the past, for example Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn. Natali loved the idea and she’s coming up with a slew of design options but, of course, everything will have their own iconic twist on it.”
Though Lady Gaga is characteristically quiet when it comes to her family, choosing to keep that side of her life private, when asked about her fave designers she subtly hinted toward her sister insisting, “There are some amazing emerging kids from Parson.”
With family values clearly strong in this relationship the real test will come when Natali’s fame explodes. The world is already starting to recognise her talent with the teenager picked to design the costumes for off-Broadway show Simon Says – a huge project for someone who is still just a student.
It seems Baby Gaga is starting to grow, let the sibling rivalry commence...
