Armenian food is both familiar and alien. Middle Eastern faves come with unfamiliar touches drawn from across the Caucasus and Central Asia. Hummus basterma comes topped with smoked beef, whileitch’ is tabbouleh in which the ratio of ingredients has been reversed – bulgur predominates rather than parsley.

Adventurous appetites will find a wealth of new flavours. The signature dish of fishnah keuftah is something of an acquired taste. Lamb kebbeh is presented on a bed of cold yoghurt, drizzled with wild sour-cherry coulis.

The walls are lined with old photos. From vintage wedding portraits to shots of smiling little girls dressed in their Sunday best, these black and white prints lend the venue a homely vibe that’s often lacking in the UAE.

Comfort food abounds. Sou beureg is a satisfying dish of pastry layered with three kinds of cheese, while Mayrig keufteh is kibbeh fashioned from mashed potato mixed with onion, walnuts and herbs. We’ll be heading right back, come winter.

Try the Armenian tea. It’s a fragrant infusion of rose petals, black tea and cinnamon. Or opt for the coffee – it’s strong and thick like the Arabic version, but comes without the cardamom.

There’s an air of authenticity. Despite its ritzy location, Mayrig has the feel of a friendly family-run restaurant, with cosy decor and warm, well-informed staff keen to share the culinary delights of their homeland.
