In the late nineties Marie-Inez Botha was handed a brochure on the proposed Palm Jumeirah project by her father, and as surreal twists of fate go, fast forward ten years and she’s now injecting her innate stylish touches to their interiors, “I never imagined, firstly, the actualisation of a Palm-shaped island and secondly that I would be decorating villas on it!” she says.

The senior interior designer at Etcetera Living Llc describes herself as a “walking, talking, black book” and as her hobbies include shopping and travelling, if she doesn’t know about it, it’s probably not worth knowing! A born adventurer, her seven year stint in Dubai began when she chose the UAE as the first stop on a round the world air ticket starting from her native South Africa. “I landed in Dubai, and somehow never left!” she laughs. “All the amount of planning in the world can’t guarantee you getting your way. We often get so wrapped up with the end in mind, that we forget to enjoy the journey – which often can actually lead us onto better paths.”

To celebrate her impending 30th birthday this year she’s planning an inspired way to honour this milestone, “I want to do 30 things I’ve never done before, big and small. First on the list is to see the gorillas in Rwanda on my birthday, I can’t wait”
