Maple Syrup Diet

WHAT’S INVOLVED: For those who want to do the Maple Syrup Diet à la Beyoncé, you will need to drink six to nine glasses of the mix for 10 days, avoiding all other food. If you want to detox without abstaining from food then it’s recommended you skip breakfast or dinner and have two to three glasses in place of your meal.
YOU WILL NEED (per glass):
- 2 tablespoons of Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup (a mix of maple and palm tree syrup)
- 2 tablespoons of freshly-squeezed lemon juice
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 pint of hot or cold water. These measurements are based on each glass
VERDICT: Ursula Arens from the British Dietetic Association spoke to the Daily Mail about the benefits and pitfalls of the Maple Syrup Diet. “If this mixture is all you are consuming, you are going to lose weight because it is an incredibly low-calorie diet, but you’re not going to keep the weight off when you stop. The only way to lose weight [and keep it off] is slowly and sensibly.”
Ryan Penny, Clinical Nutritionist and Conditioning Coach for The Wellness Brothers, agrees and offers this warning: “My first introduction to this diet was when a 13-year-old boy told me that it was what he was currently using to lose weight. He said he found it on the Internet and that if it worked for Beyoncé it would work for him. I feel compelled to grab the opportunity to urge everybody who posts information about health and wellbeing on the Internet to be responsible. It is nonsense like this diet that can lead to a world of confusion and hurt for people blinded by the ‘Bright Lights’ of some not-so-bright celebrities.”
