When MADONNA made a tearful phone call from her Dhs7.3million New York penthouse in the early hours of last Saturday morning to her newly adopted Malawian daughter MERCY JAMES, the 50-year-old reportedly told the bewildered tot, “You are part of us now.” But as arrangements for Mercy to start her new life are made – with Madonna chartering a private jet to collect Mercy from the impoverished African country and catapult her into upper-class Manhattan – Ahlan! investigates the shocking changes the four-year-old is about to experience...
The high life
Despite Madonna pledging her “motherly devotion” to her new daughter, telling her, “I promise I will love, protect and guide you with my every breath,” Mercy is unlikely to see much of her new mum during her first weeks in America.
Madonna did not fly to Africa to bring her new daughter back to New York, instead the travel arrangements were left to Madge’s Malawian lawyer, Alan Chinula to finalise.
“I am awaiting instructions from New York to start preparing travel arrangements for Mercy. I have to be there for her passport and everything,” he revealed after the court ruling in Madonna’s favour, last week.
When she is finally united with her new mother, Mercy will likely be allowed a small window in Madonna’s busy schedule, before she’s handed over to an expert team of nannies.
“She’s hardly ever with her children. She’s got two full-time nannies and one part-time nanny. So, why adopt a kid if somebody else is raising them?” questioned Madonna’s ex-chef, Eric Ienco recently. Adding, “Madonna puts herself before her kids. When she adopted little David, he arrived at her home from Africa – and three hours later, she left to do Pilates. Wouldn’t you think she would want to spend the entire day with her new son?”
With Madonna’s schedule set to get even tighter as she resumes her Sticky Sweet tour for seven weeks on July 4 – during which time her ex GUY RITCHIE is rumoured to be taking custody of Rocco and DAVID BANDA – insiders are questioning Madonna’s motives for adopting a child she has little time for.
Rumours abound that Madonna’s dogged pursuit of Mercy is motivated more by outrage at being refused something for the first time in her life, than a genuine maternal desire.
“Madonna is not a patient person, she’s used to getting what she wants,” said a source. While a close friend added, “She made a promise that she wouldn’t give up on Mercy and believe me, she could move mountains when she’s this determined.”
Proving just how determined she is, Madonna forked out a reported Dhs73million on charitable projects across Malawi to ensure the adoption appeal swung in her favour.
Danger of change
Though Madonna’s camp denies that she ‘bought’ Mercy, saying, “It’s a total fabrication to say that Madonna poured money into Malawi for the purposes of being able to adopt a child,” a spokesman for a Malawian children’s charity has warned of the damage that being singled out by Madonna could cause little Mercy.
“It’s hard to say how much damage may have been done to a girl who’s been moved from pillar to post because of one woman’s determination,” said Maxwell Matewere from Malawi’s Eye. Adding, “For the past two months she has been living like no other Malawian child, surrounded by toys and a bewildering array of luxury... we cannot approve of the stress she has already suffered.”
Mercy’s new A-list lifestyle
Her new life couldn’t be further from the poverty she’s left behind in Malawi...
Crib From a crammed Malawian orphanage – where life expectancy is just 40 – Mercy will be based at Madge’s plush New York pad , overlooking Central Park, and will also spend time jetting between her mum’s LA and London mansions.
Water Moving from a country plagued by drought, Mercy will drink special Kabbalah bottled water, at Dhs15 a bottle.
Toys Mercy – whose orphanage couldn’t even afford a bicycle – will be flooded with expensive gifts. Her brother David was given a Dhs30,000 rocking horse and a child-sized electric BMW after his adoption.
Private school Mercy James will join her new brother David at New York’s prestigious French-speaking private nursery, Le Petit Paradis.
Kabbalah Trips Mercy will be expected to join the family on the weekly visits to the Kabbalah Centre in New York, along with Lourdes, David, Rocco and Madonna’s toy boy, Jesus Luz.
