Alice Temperley is riding a serious wave of worldwide popularity right now thanks in part to the loyalty of to the Middleton sisters. The British designer’s whimsical intricate designs are sold in over 300 stores in 37 countries around the world, and now she has her sights set on Doha. We catch up with the Notting Hill designer who, as well as being loved by Kate and Pippa, is also worn by the likes of Sophie Dahl, Emma Watson and Keira Knightley, as she launches her brand new stylish boutique in The Gate Mall in partnership with Salam Stores.

Welcome to Doha. What made you decided to open a shop here?
Thank you. We’ve had such a warm welcome here. We found a great partner in the Salam group who understand us and want to work with us to expand further into the Middle East, which is a market that is very important to us.

Why did you choose The Gate Mall?
It’s a beautiful shopping mall that fits our luxury aesthetic perfectly, and it has been built on family principles and hard work which I respect.

What is it that makes shoppers identify so deeply with your brand?
I am a woman, designing for women. I know how we want to feel – elegant, feminine and ageless, but also the best version of ourselves. I never believe a dress should wear the owner, the dress should only compliment her.

You were on Kate Middleton’s shortlist of wedding dress designers. How did that feel?
We’re very honoured that the Duchess of Cambridge chooses to wear our clothes, in fact I’m honoured when any woman chooses to wear Temperley when there is so much to choose from out there. We dressed her sister Pippa Middleton in a bespoke long green gown for the wedding reception and she looked wonderful.

What do you think of the Sarah Burton dress she opted for?
Incredible. It was absolutely the right choice and very special. I think what Sarah is doing with McQueen is inspiring.

What can we expect from your collection in your first Doha store?
You’ll find our Spring Summer collection in store right now, which is colourful, feminine and brings a piece of the French Riviera to the Middle East. I’m also going to work on limited edition runs just for the store that fit the need of the Doha lady such as kaftans and more long evening pieces with special embellishments.

Pippa Middleton is a massive fan. We loved the green dress you designed for her for the Royal Wedding Party – we imagine you got loads of requests to recreate that frock?
It’s a shape based on one of our iconic gowns so versions of it will appear each season – there’s a navy blue one not dissimilar in the window of our new store at The Gate right now.

What are Kate and Pippa really like?
Charming. A great asset to Britain.

Is there one celebrity who you would really like to dress?
Marion Coutillard. Her acting in La vie en rose is incredible.

You’ve got a gorgeous little boy. Is there a secret to juggling children and a career?
A supportive team, a packed schedule, a wonderful nanny and a house right next to my office.

Have you ever been star-struck?
Yes, by Her Majesty The Queen - I almost forgot to curtsy!

How do you like to spend your down time?
In Somerset, at my house in the countryside.

How did it feel to be awarded an MBE? Were you nervous about meeting the Queen?
Meeting the queen, and being recognised for my services to the British fashion industry, was a real highlight of my career. I was thrilled to meet her, and amazed at how chatty she was.
