Lupita Nyong'o swears shea butter is the secret to keeping her hair in tip-top condition.
When it comes to her red carpet looks, the Black Panther actress has become somewhat of a style chameleon, and often experiments with her hairstyles, trying everything from braids to curls.
Speaking about her haircare routine with Allure magazine, Lupita shared that she tends to turn to just one product on her locks.
"Shea butter, natural shea butter — no perfumes, no bleaches — which doesn’t smell great at all, but it does wonders to my hair," she told the publication.
Lupita and her long-time hairstylist Vernon Francois look to maintain her natural texture by using regular conditioning treatments.
Over the years, she has also discovered that her curls need layers of hydration.
"One thing I’ve learned was the acronym LOC, and that’s basically the rule for how to treat my hair: liquid, oil, and then cream. It’s the idea that you wet your hair first, then you add oil so that it can trap the moisture in, then you put a moisturiser or a cream over it," the 34-year-old shared.
In an accompanying editorial for Allure, Lupita showed off a series of hair looks, including thin braids with gold and silver beads, and her natural "coil-y or kinky hair".
Vernon was once again behind the styles, and in addition to using conventional hair products, he also suggested people feel free to try out other items in their tresses too.
“Don’t be afraid to repurpose things; choose different metallic colours and finishes,” he said, adding that it was a joy to work with the actress. “It’s always a collaborative, creative process when Lupita and I work together. We bounce ideas around and get excited about the possibilities — and about resetting expectations for hair.”
