Race day revelry! Forget Ascot and the Kentucky Derby, by far the most glamorous date on the international racing calendar – and Dubai’s social scene – is the Dubai World Cup. Held annually since 1996 at Nad Al Sheba on the last Saturday of March, this thoroughbred horse race is more about getting dolled up, buying yourself a big shiny hat, and getting out there to be seen at the world’s richest horse race. Run over 2,000 metres (10 furlongs) and with a prize purse of Dhs22million, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of big names involved on race day, from top-class jockeys like Frankie Dettori to legendary racehorse trainers and horse-loving celebrities. But if the pedigree on the track is anything to swoon about, then the fashion pedigree off it is simply drool-worthy. The style stakes in the Best Dressed competitions are highly anticipated, and don’t expect the competition to be lax, especially when there are big prizes to be won in categories such as Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Couple and Best Hat. For the rest, there’s the entertainment in the Bubble Lounge and International Village, where at times, it seems like the whole of Dubai has left the city and come to celebrate.
