A-list Guide to the 2012 Abu Dhabi Film Festival

The Abu Dhabi Film Festival starts on 11 October, and we've got the low-down on everything from where to celeb-spot to which flicks to see!

Roll-up, movie buffs and celeb spotters! It’s time for the sixth annual Abu Dhabi Film Festival, and this year’s is even bigger than the last. Running for 10 days from Thursday 11 to Saturday 20 October, the festival will showcase the best of local and international filmmaking, including red carpet premieres, competitions, masterclasses and workshops by film experts, plus more movie-related entertainment. This year, 165 films (81 feature-length films and 84 shorts) representing 48 countries will be screened, so plan your week in advance. Read on for all the essentials – you’re welcome!

Visiting Celebrities
Richard Gere
Richard is a man who needs no introduction! Solidifying himself as a permanent fixture on the silver screen with his unforgettable appearances in blockbusters like Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman, the award-winning actor is heading to Abu Dhabi to walk the red carpet at the premiere of his latest movie Arbitrage. Brace yourselves, ladies!


Nate Parker
Gere’s Arbitrage co-star Nate will join him at the premiere. Nate’s starred in flicks such as The Great Debaters and The Secret Life of Bees alongside Alicia Keys.

Claudia Cardinale
Italian film star Claudia, 74, has appeared in some of the most prominent European films of the Sixties and Seventies, and will be awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award! For your chance to catch a glimpse of the big screen icon, make sure you head down on opening night.

Shabana Azmi
Shabana is an Award-winning Indian actress who has starred in over 120 Hindi movies, and is the first woman ever to chair the festival jury!

Golshifteh Farahani
Iranian actress Golshifteh will attend the festival’s opening night. She’s best known for her roles in movies such as About Elly and Body of Lies, which have picked up awards at film festivals around the world.

Sawsan Badr
Egyptian screen legend Sawsan will be the first Arab star to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award!

Where to Celeb-Spot
Each year A-listers flock to the VIP Lounge at Emirates Palace for nibbles, drinks and über-glitzy goody bags (turn to page 96 for your chance to win one of your own).
