Lady Gaga caused outrage by posting a comment on Twitter which could be construed as encouraging eating disorders, “Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat.”
The surprising hash tag, #PopSingersDontEat, sparked thousands of comments and Gaga came under fire from the National Eating Disorders Association, which criticised her for promoting unhealthy dieting. “This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?” asked an angered group supporter.
Several of Gaga’s 22 million followers were also shocked, with fans making comments like, “Why would you even promote a message like that?” and “Seriously what is Lady Gaga playing at? Great role model she is.”
Gaga, 26, famously struggled with bulimia as a teenager and has been encouraging fans to steer clear of similar conditions for years. In February she said, “The dieting wars have got to stop. Everyone just knock it off.”
Her comment comes just days after Miley Cyrus was slammed for tweeting a photo of herself inhaling the contents of a takeout bag with the comment, “I can’t eat it. So I’m just gonna smell the s*** out of it! My mouth is literally watering.” The difference however is Miley defended her comment, stating she couldn’t eat as she has a “gluten and lactose allergy”, whereas Gaga has failed to comment.
