If you don’t know the names Jen Atkin and Mary Phillips, then where have you been hiding? The über-talented duo are jetting into town on 25 May with the one and only Khloé Kardashian for their Mane Addicts hair and make-up seminar. In celebration, it would only be fair for Team Ahlan! to uncover all their fabulous inside secrets, right?

Jen Atkin: Hair stylist

How did you get your break in the world of celebrity styling?
I was lucky enough to quickly land a job assisting one of LA’s most famed hair stylists, Andy Lecompte, not long after I moved there to do hair. It wasn’t long before I was going with him on tour with Madonna, travelling the world and styling the dancers’ hair!

A lot of celebs have chopped off their locks recently. What do you think will be the next big hair trend?
Short hair is still fun and refreshing this year, and getting rid of damaged ends adds youthfulness to hair. We’re also seeing a lot more blunt looks this year, with fewer layers around the face and more fullness.

Which celebrity always gets it right on the red carpet?
I love everything Julianne Moore does. My good friend Marcus Francis does her hair and she is the chicest.

What are your top hair tips for girls on the go?
Invest in a good haircut. When you have the right haircut for your hair type and face shape, you will have to do less styling for it to look good.

Tell us more about the Mane Addicts Seminar, please!
I’m so happy we’re coming with Khloé – she’s so daring with her looks. I usually get lots of emails and comments on her photos asking how I created something. This seminar was a great opportunity for Mary and I to offer a sneak peek into our morning sessions with her, showing how to create a few of her favourite beauty looks.

Mary Phillips: make-up artist

You’ve been Jennifer Lopez’s personal make-up artist since 2006 – how did you bag such a huge client in such a competitive industry?
Things just naturally aligned! She was looking for a make-up artist and I made sure to make myself available – I guess some people would call that luck, but then you have to succeed in the actual situation for people to want to work with you again, and that takes preparation and practice, not just your kit.

If you could make over one celebrity in the world, who would it be?
I can’t pick one! I’d love to work with Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Sophia Loren, Aishwarya Rai, Gal Gadot, Margot Robbie and Natalie Portman, to name just a few!

Which A-lister would you say always gets her make-up bang on the money?
Rihanna and Beyoncé both always look great.

What’s the biggest beauty faux pas a person can make?
Easily the wrong colour of foundation – too light or dark for concealer or the wrong choice of coverage. I’m talking about using a powder when all you need is a tinted moisturiser. Also make-up on umoistened, untreated or neglected skin is not a good look.

Talk us through your top make-up selfie tips…
Lol! You can even forgo make-up because the real selfie deal is all about insanely good lighting and an obscenely good angle for your face – those two things are at the very top of the selfie list!
