It’s been a difficult 17 months for Kesha. The pop star has been very publicly battling Sony and her former mentor, Dr Luke, after accusing the record producer of abusing her. The 28-year-old has been left devastated after being told she will have to continue working with him, but her famous female friends, including Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, have banded together to support her.
Kesha broke down in tears after a judge dismissed a preliminary injunction she was seeking to end her contract with record label bosses at Sony last Friday. The Tik Tok hitmaker filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against her one-time producer Dr Luke in October, 2014, accusing him of subjecting her to years of sexual, physical, verbal and emotional abuse. She even went as far as to claim his actions led to her 60-day stint in the Timberline Knolls rehab clinic in Illinois two years ago.
The Contract Continues
Dr Luke, real name Lukasz Gottwald, hit back with his own countersuit for defamation and extortion, alleging the singer and her mother, Pebe Sebert, 59, had threatened to go public with various stories about his alleged inappropriate behaviour unless he released her from the management contract she signed with him when she was 18. The 28-year-old asked to be released from the deal with Dr Luke, 42, claiming she was unable to continue with her music career, because she’s prohibited from working with another label, adding that executives at Sony would not promote her music if she was to pair up with another producer. However, a judge dismissed her argument. “You’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry,” said New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich as part of her ruling in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Free Kesha Now!
Kesha was greeted by a throng of fans as she arrived at the courthouse on Friday morning. Many held placards and chanted “Free Kesha Now! Free Kesha Now!” as she prepared for her day in court. One sobbing fan the singer comforted on the courthouse steps told Kesha, “You don’t deserve this at all. It’s unfair.” Kesha’s pop star peers and pals have offered her their support too. Lorde, Lily Allen, and Halsey were among the pop stars who took to Twitter to share their “disgust” over the outcome of the delayed court hearing. “Standing with @KeshaRose through this traumatic, deeply unfair time,” Lorde wrote. “Send good vibes her way, everyone”, while Brit Lily added: “My thoughts are with @KeshaRose today. I’m sorry you’ve had to endure this experience.” Meanwhile, angry Halsey offered: “Disgusted by anyone in power positions abusing their authority. My heart breaks for Kesha and all people affected by this toxicity. I only hope she can find peace and a way to continue to express herself without fear.”
Iggy & Gaga Rally Round
Lady Gaga, who has spoken out previously about her own struggles with abuse, said: “There are people all over the world who love you, and I can say truly I’m in awe of your bravery.” Ariana Grande tweeted a purple heart emoji with the caption: “My heart is with Kesha Rose.” Rapper Iggy Azalea also expressed her thoughts, posting: “If two people don’t want to be in business with one another it seems very cruel for one to hold the other in a contract. I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but I believe Kesha deserves the ability to move forward, create and earn a living.” Kelly Clarkson, who has also worked with Dr Luke in the past, tweeted: “Trying to not say anything since I can’t say anything nice about a person… so this is me not talking about Dr Luke.” Taylor Swift made a grand gesture by donating $250,000 to Kesha in order to help her with legal fees, but Demi Lovato slammed the 1984 singer and said: “Actually speak out about something and then I’ll be impressed. Not everyone has $250k to just give to people. At least I speak up about s*** that’s uncomfortable to talk about rather than trying to be politically correct 24/7.”
Kesha Wins One Battle
Kesha can celebrate one victory against Dr Luke, since her mother beat a New York defamation lawsuit filed against her by the producer. The music maker launched legal action against Sebert, accusing her of fuelling Kesha’s anger, but a New York judge dismissed Dr Luke’s lawsuit, citing jurisdiction issues, while also declaring his case lacked evidence proving Sebert had “control” over the singer. Despite the setback, Luke’s fight against Sebert is not
over yet. He has also filed a similar defamation case against Kesha’s mum in Tennessee.
