Katy Perry and Furne One - Fashion's Hottest New Pairing!
Katy Perry’s not the kind of girl to wear a boring dress. Nuh-uh. Give her something latex, sparkly, covered in feathers or in the shape of a merry go-round however, and she’s a happy lady. So it was only a matter of time before one of the world’s most spectacular dressers and successful female artists (she’s just broken records by scoring 5 number one songs on the Billboard charts from her latest album, Teenage Dreams, and been nominated for nine awards at this month’s MTV VMA’s) discovered one of Dubai’s most celebrated fashion talents and an Ahlan! Hot 100 alum – Amato Couture’s Furne One – and catapulted him into the international fashion spotlight.
Already a favourite of Heidi Klum, who has worked closely with the famously modest Filipino designer for the last five season’s of Germany’s Next Top Model, Furne was introduced to the 26-year-old singing star when she performed on Heidi’s show – and she was instantly smitten with his work. “I got a call from Katy’s people in April asking if I would make her a dress – and I was amazed when she wore it just weeks later to the Logies in Australia” says Furne. But this was just the start of the incredible chain of events that has brought the uber-talented Satwa based designer to the brink of fashion megastardom. Katy loved the dazzling nude beaded Logies dress so much, she invited Furne to create a selection of costumes for her sellout California Dreams world tour – and he’s been working with the unstoppable popstrel ever since. “I LOVE working with Furne One, because his imagination with designing dresses and costumes for me is limitless” Katy exclusively told Ahlan! Well known for his dramatic designs, and astonishing catwalk shows that are the toast of Dubai Fashion Week and beyond, Katy has been dazzled by the talents of one of the Middle East’s most jealously guarded sartorial secrets, and the extraordinary pieces he has created for her. “He doesn’t play by the rules and that’s what makes him a treasure” Katy revealed. And, not playing by the rules is exactly what has made Furne the talk of Tinseltown. From intricately hand-stiched and hand beaded couture gowns to structural masterpieces made of everything from vintage lace to lolly sticks, Amato Couture is the hottest new label in Hollywood. “After I started working with Katy, J-lo’s people called” says a sheepish looking Furne. “LA is a small town, and Katy and J-lo’s stylists are friends. So I sent a few of my dresses to Jennifer from here in Dubai. The next thing I knew, she was wearing one of them on stage in London – and then she wore it again!” A megastar wearing the same dress twice? That’s a sure sign that you’ve made it, right? But Furne is refreshingly philosophical about the crazy fashion world he’s living in right now. “I feel so happy that there are A-listers wearing my clothes. But until you see them actually wearing your stuff, it’s not quite real. There are a lot of designers out there, and so many amazing gowns for them to choose from that you never know if you’ll be lucky and they choose you.”
But despite his modesty, it seems unlikely that the Amato Couture hotline is going to go quiet anytime soon. Or ever, if recent events are to be considered. “I had a call from Lady Gaga’s people” Furne quietly explained. “I met them in Germany a while ago, but never expected to hear from them. I sent her two dresses last week. But whether or not she’ll wear them? I’ll just have to wait and see!”
In the meantime, there’s plenty to be getting on with. Aside from preparing for the launch of his first stateside boutique on the infamous Hollywood shopping haunt Melrose at the end of the year, Furne is feverishly working on more tour costumes for his new fashion bestie Katy, and looking forward to her scooping up armfuls of awards at the MTV Video Music Awards at the end of August. But will Katy be wearing one of Furne’s gowns on the night? “I honestly have no idea” says Furne. “But I’d love it if she did.” With Katy already a dedicated Furne fan, we’re pretty sure he has nothing to worry about. “Every time a new costume by Furne and his team arrives I am overwhelmed by the care and attention to detail they have invested into the piece.” Katy told us. “I’m very excited about our future collaborations with this up and coming, outta the box designer.” With three of the world’s biggest performers loving his work, major celeb collaborations in the offing and a glitzy new Hollywood boutique on the horizon, the future couldn’t be brighter for Dubai’s reluctant fashion star. And quite frankly, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Go, fabulous Furne!
