The once fresh-faced Ohio girl, who shot to fame in teen TV series Dawson’s Creek, wed Tom over five years ago in Italy, and while many questioned the marriage from the start, Katie seemed committed, leaving her old life and career behind to play happy families. She even became a Scientologist and attended meetings with Tom. But clever Katie, whose father Martin is a lawyer, allegedly never let her guard down, saying very little at the organisation’s so-called ‘audits’, during which members are encouraged to share everything.
A source told RadarOnline, “Katie’s father, Martin, advised her to be careful with what she said during these sessions so that nothing negative could get leaked to the press or be used to make her look bad,” adding, “Katie is level-headed and extremely smart. She was never completely committed to Scientology, but she participated because she was truly in love with Tom and she knew it meant a lot to him. Her heart just wasn’t in it though.” Katie even had allies on the inside who kept her family updated on Tom’s role in the organisation and the ‘iron grip’ that the bizarre philosophy seems to have on him.
Former high-ranking Scientologist, Marty Rathbun, broke rank with the group, revealing in an exclusive chat with RadarOnline that an insider had Katie’s back, giving her team the inside scoop on “audit sessions with Tom Cruise from 2001 to 2004”. The source added, “I can tell you that I have a friend that has been providing Katie Holmes’ family information for years. This has been going on for at least four years”. He also revealed, “The audit sessions with Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were always either audiotaped or videotaped... those remain with the Church of Scientology. The Church definitely would have wanted to know Katie’s every thought.” According to the New York Post, Katie also switched “cell phones and e-mail addresses” prior to filing for divorce.
Before news of her divorce broke, Ahlan!’s roving reporter caught up with Katie for a refreshingly revealing chat about romance, work and what she looks for in a man.
You’re 33 now and a mum, has your opinion of men changed as you’ve got older?
Yeah, definitely because I think the more experience that you have, the more you learn about yourself and guys and what you want. I think in your teenage years looks are the most important and you really don’t know much about dating, and so it’s mostly, “Is he an athlete?” and “Is he cute?”. That’s the one I liked. Then, I guess, with the experiences I’ve had in my life and in this business and all that I’ve learned, it’s wonderful to be with someone who is handsome, really smart and caring and understanding, has a good perspective on life and a broad perspective.
What exactly do you mean by a broad perspective?
I think that’s the right way to say it, just very open-minded. Someone who has seen a lot of the world and wants to continue seeing more.
Does he have to be spontaneous? Is that the top quality that you look for in a man?Yeah, I think spontaneity is fun, but I don’t think that it’s the most important thing. I like surprises, but I think the most important thing about a relationship is trust and respect.
Do you still believe in fairytale romances?
Oh yes. I watched a lot of movies growing up, and a lot of romantic comedies. And I really believed them! I would use them. And then realise that sometimes they’re not so… true to life! I was a big dork! But of course I believe in fairytales. How can you not? Those fairytale moments are one of the great joys of life.
What would be your idea of the perfect romantic date?
I would say maybe early morning, swimming in an ocean. And then a breakfast in a house, not a restaurant.
How do you stay grounded?
Appreciating the little things and life and just being happy.
What makes you happy?
So much. I’m a very lucky woman – my daughter, my family, my work.
What do you fear in life?
I don’t fear anything.
What is your overall life philosophy?
Treat others as you want to be treated. And just don’t give up on everything in your life. I think you should try to make yourself better each day. Every day you have the opportunity to do something different. You’re trading in that day for life and you never get that day back. So whatever you do, it better be worth the trade. I thought it was a longer way of saying – make the most of it. I’ve always liked the Nike tagline – Just do it. Yeah, I like them short and sweet. And steal some muffins along the way.
You don’t look like you eat too many muffins. Have you always had a nice figure?
I’ve always been really active. My family is really active. My dad and sisters run all the time. There’s always golf happening, I don’t golf, I’m not very athletic. But I did the dancing thing and all of that in high school. We just kind of do a lot.
What is your least and most favorite body part when you look in the mirror?
Least favorite body part is my feet because they always hurt and are always full of blisters. My favorite is probably my eyes, because I love being able to see everything [laughs]. That’s one sense – if I lost my sight after seeing the world – I would miss.
What’s your best beauty tip?
There’s no denying you have to drink a lot of water every day and you have to moisturise your skin or else you’re going to get wrinkles. And toner is very good for the cheekbones. That’s what I would recommend purchasing.
What’s your favorite fashion tip?
Wear black, always. You can’t go wrong.
Katie gets revenge with her own racy shoot
While Tom hides from the spotlight, Katie seems intent on showing her ex what he’s missing! Last month Tom shocked us with his suggestive photoshoot with two scantilly clad blondes for W magazine and now Katie’s playing him at his own game! The 33-year-old did a steamy photoshoot for the August cover of Elle US in which she smoulders while wearing a revealing top. In the candid interview, which was also carried out before she filed for divorce, Katie opened up about how she’s never felt more sexy. “I’m starting to come into my own,” she said, adding, “It’s like a new phase. I feel much more comfortable in my own skin.”
Whether Katie was hinting at her upcoming divorce, we can’t say for sure, but we do know that she looks fantastic! The actress has also been snapped on the street looking a lot more fashion savvy recently after several months where she’s frequently topped worst dressed lists. Now it seems she’s back to her old stylish self and looking hotter than ever. Good on you, Katie. We wonder what Tom thinks of the new look...
Fears ending up like Nicole?
It’s rumoured that if you leave Scientology you’ll be cut off from everyone in the church, including your children. Tom’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman allegedly lost access to their adopted kids, Isabella and Connor, when she divorced Tom in 2001 and The Mirror reports, “Katie knows this and is doing everything in her power not to end up in the same tragic position as Nicole.”
How they avoided a courtroom showdown
Katie and Tom apparently worked towards a speedy divorce settlement to avoid a public battle in the courtroom. The couple reportedly signed a pre-nup, which would entitle Katie to about $18 million (Dhs66 million), $3 million (Dhs11 million) for every year of marriage, but a source revealed that she doesn’t care about Tom’s cash, claiming,“She’s not about the money. She’s not that girl. She loves to work.” She is likely, however, to be awarded property and a “suitable amount” of child support. Alternatively, Katie could “walk away with what she brought into the marriage”, an inside source said, but they claim that’s “fine with her”.
