Joaquin Phoenix has confessed he fabricated the story of his engagement, just a few hours after making the announcement.
The Walk the Line star sensationally revealed on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night that he was to be married to a mystery yoga instructor.
He said, "We started dating, and I think she's the one. I proposed to her and she said yes. If everything works out, I'm getting married... I don't know what that says about me."
However, Phoenix changed his story on Tuesday morning during an appearance on Good Morning America, when he told George Stephanopoulos that he merely wanted the audience to like him and was not engaged.
He said, "I think like my life's so boring, and it seemed like something exciting to talk about, and I wanted the audience to like me. They really like people getting married. I can get engaged again, if you like?"
After his Good Morning America chat he went on to appear on Live! With Kelly and Michael in which he claimed Letterman knew he was joking and insisted he does not even do yoga or have an instructor.
He said, "I did not play a prank on him - he knew that I was joking around. Did I say that? I was in bed too, I was getting ready for this show. I have no idea what I said."
