Last week we were all pretty shocked when Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux announced their split after two years of marriage. But today it's been revealed that the two reportedly made a last-ditch attempt to save their marriage on a holiday to Mexico in December.
The 49-year-old actress and Theroux, who started dating in 2011 and wed in a ceremony at their Bel-Air home in Los Angeles in August 2015, stunned the world on Thursday when they released a joint statement announcing their split.
Jennifer and Justin were last photographed together on 1 January as they enjoyed the sunshine in Cabo San Lucas with the actress' Horrible Bosses co-star Jason Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka.
And, according to Us Weekly magazine, it was Amanda who convinced the pair to try and work through their issues on their sunshine break.
"Jason Bateman’s wife convinced Justin to go to Cabo," a source told the publication. "She has been the mediator in recent months, trying to get Jen and Justin to work through their problems and save their marriage. The Cabo trip was a make or break vacation for Jen and Justin. They went away with their friends hoping to have fun and work on it."
However, things didn't quite go as planned, as the insider added: "The guys and girls hung out separately in Mexico. It didn’t work."
Their separation announcement read, "This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship... Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another."
Following the announcement, the natural next step for Jennifer and Justin will be divorce. But the former Friends star won't have to worry about The Leftovers actor trying to get his hands on her fortune, as the pair are said to have signed an "ironclad" pre-nuptial agreement before their 2015 wedding.
"Jennifer has an ironclad prenup with Justin. It would be very hard for Justin to contest it. The prenup talks before the marriage were long and intense," a separate source told Us Weekly. "Jen’s assets and Friends fortune are protected."
