Last night, Janet Jackson was honoured with the Global Icon Award at the 2018 MTV European Music Awards in Bilbao, Spain.

While picking up the prestigious award, the Rhythm Nation singer delivered an emotional and powerful speech, focusing on the #MeToo movement in particular.

"Tonight I feel moved to speak for women whose voices have been stifled," she said while receiving her award. "I am one of those women. Women who have been gagged both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, who have been intimated, who have lived in fear. I stand with you - you are my sisters."

The speech, which seemed to move award presenter Camila Cabello to tears, was greeted by cheers from the enthusiastic Spanish crowd.

In being recognised with a MTV EMA Global Icon Award, Janet joins the likes of Whitney Houston, U2, Eminem, Bon Jovi and Queen.

Also on the night, she wowed fans with a barefoot performance of a medley of her greatest hits.

Janet Jackson's powerful speech in full:

"I love you guys so much... I accept this award with profound gratitude, to be called an icon is a tremendous honour, but one that comes with a tremendous responsibility.

"Tonight I feel moved to speak for women whose voices have been stifled.

"I am one of those women. Women who have been gagged both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, who have been intimated, who have lived in fear. I stand with you - you are my sisters.

"Tonight I carry the hope that a new world is emerging, a world in which caring people - male as well as female - will no longer tolerate gender inequality.

"Women, our voices will be heard, we will be heard, when we speak out for justice... Speak out for the spirit that crosses all borders, recognises the dignity of all people and affirms the beauty of all faiths. Speak out for acts of true charity, small and large.

"Speak out for an all embracing love because it’s love that will heal our wounds, love that will give us strength to come to one and others aid, so let’s lift our voices and let’s start today and let the ever amazing love of God lead the way.

"With all my heart I thank you god. I thank all of my fans, I love you so much. And mama loves you Eissa... thank you so much for this honour."
