Is Posh Too Pushy?
They have one of the longest standing marriages in celeb land and are devoted parents to their four children, but David and Victoria Beckham have found themselves being branded as pushy parents and accused of taking advantage of their fame after their 11-year-old son Cruz released his first music single this week.
For months, both David, 41 and Victoria, 42, have been sharing clips of young Cruz singing on their social media accounts followed by millions, but few were unsurprised when the youngster released a Christmas charity song, If Every Day Was Christmas, on the airwaves last week. The single is already tipped to scoop the coveted number one spot on the Christmas charts, with all proceeds going towards a charity for disadvantaged children across the United Kingdom.
After joining Instagram last week – and amassing 30,000 followers in just one hour – Cruz shared the artwork for his single and some behind-the-scenes shots of him recording in the studio on his account. It’s also been revealed that Scooter Braun – the man who's responsible for Justin Bieber's meteoric rise from Canadian YouTuber to a global music sensation – is now managing the budding pop career of the Beckham’s third child.
Not long after Cruz’s song was heard for the first time on the radio, social media users were instantly split in their opinions over it, and over the youngster’s age. Outspoken media personality Piers Morgan was one of the first to publicly voice his opinion, labelling Cruz’s early pop breakthrough as “sickening” and stating that he "should be at school." On British television he said that Cruz should have to go through the “hard graft” that other budding singers do, and not be able to springboard off his parent’s fame and connections.
Sharon Osbourne is another famous face against Cruz’s young start. She said” “It’s a cruel industry and at 11, you’re too young to handle that.” She continued: “He should be singing in his bedroom with a hairbrush or playing for the family with his guitar at Christmas.”
The accusations that David and Victoria are using their A-list connections to further Cruz’s career have grown legs after it was revealed that Victoria approached former Pussycat Doll and X Factor UK judge Nicole Scherzinger to duet with her son. At a red carpet bash, 38-year-old Nicole confirmed that the fashion designer had discussed with her the idea of a collaboration with 11-year-old Cruz. She said: "I mean I would do a duet, she seems keen.” However Nicole showed her concern over Cruz's young age, saying: "But what, he’s how old? He’s like one year old."
Victoria’s drive to develop lucrative careers for her children is said to be so determined, that it’s rumoured friends and family refer to her as ‘The Momager’, à la Kris Jenner – head of the Jenner/Kardashian clan.
The Bankable Beckham’s
Cruz isn't the only child in the famous family who’s got on the career ladder early. While he’s following in the footsteps of his Spice Girl mother, 17-year-old Brooklyn and 14-year-old Romeo are already major players in both the photography and fashion industries. Brooklyn raised eyebrows earlier this year when, though only still studying photography at a London college, he landed the coveted gig of shooting Burberry’s 2016 fragrance campaign. Posh is also said to have masterminded a book deal for the teen. Set to be released next year, What I See, will contain over 300 snaps taken by Brooklyn and will give an insight into the world “through his eyes”. He also dabbles in fashion, having appeared on the cover of various magazines and is currently the face of Spanish brand, Pull & Bear.
Middle son Romeo, meanwhile, is known for his foray into the modelling world, namely his numerous ads with British fashion house Burberry, alongside stars like Emma Watson and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. He’s even said to have earned an estimated £500,000 already for his work!
Seeing as a three-year-old Cruz stole the show at a Spice Girls concert back in 2008 by breakdancing on stage, perhaps Victoria’s plan to help him become a popstar is not a shock. The Beckham’s only daughter Harper, five, is too young to be a real player in Brand Beckham just yet, but perhaps it won't be too long until we see a Harper Beckham clothing line?!
