Formula One attracts large numbers of people from overseas

International F1 fans were out in force at Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday (12 October) for the second day of the 2011 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The sold-out event has attracted a huge number of people from all corners of the world, who have travelled to Abu Dhabi especially for the race weekend.

From the US, Dovenia Ponnoth, 31, travelled to Abu Dhabi for the first time with a group of three friends just for the race. An avid F1 fan, she said that she is eagerly waiting for the F1 to come to America, “I grew up watching Schumacher, he is my favourite and I’m glad that he is back in the race. Since I arrived on Thursday, I’ve been lucky enough to meet Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, they are all so sweet. Schumi even spoke to me, which has been the highlight of my trip.”

Peter Nicholson, 30, of Australia attended the race with his three year-old son Kobi Nicholson, he commented, “I love car racing, the V8’s are my favourite; I will have to come back next year to see them with the F1 cars.  It’s a great atmosphere here and there are lots of games and things for me and my son to do, he is having lots of fun and is very excited to see all the racing.”

Anna Gregorian, 28, from Moscow in Russia, travels to F1 events throughout the world and is at the Abu Dhabi race for the second time. This year instead of just coming with one friend, she has brought along a group of four, she commented, “I love it here, it is one of the most fantastic races; everywhere else it is just a sport, but here it’s something different. I came back this year, because it is very comfortable, everything runs smoothly from transport to parking, it is so easy.”
