The rumours have been around for ages that all was not well in the RITCHIE-CICONE household, but ever the control freak, MADONNA'S rep issued a statement in July, declaring, “There are no plans for Madonna and GUY to divorce.”
But as she slams Guy live on stage at her recent Boston gig, hinting that he was “emotionally retarded” and had “intimacy issues”, the pair’s marriage has been blown wide open, with both sides gearing up for a very nasty and public fight.
Ahlan! reveals the SIX REASONS the marriage failed and where the warring couple go from here…
Her controlling ways
Even when it came to her divorce, sources revealed, “Madonna wanted a highly stage-managed separation, with their split being announced when it was convenient for her.” And her behaviour is indicative of the type of things insiders say Guy has had to put up with over the past 10 years of marriage, which included Madonna, Banning dairy, sugar, salt and processed meat from the house, Banning television and newspapers, Sleeping in a plastic body suit to fight ageing whilst slathered in Dhs3,600-a-jar anti-ageing cream Guy told friends, “I just wanted a regular husband and wife thing. But it was always a great song and dance just to do ordinary stuff.” And a family insider told the Daily Mail, “It has become so bad that they cannot be in a room together for more than a few minutes without having a shouting match.”
David Banda and more adoption plans
Insiders are adamant that it was Madonna’s controversial adoption of David Banda back in October 2006, that sparked the beginning of the end of her relationship with Guy. Guy famously didn’t fly to Malawi while Madge finalised the lengthy process, and is said to have opposed the decision from the start.
“From what I understand, Guy really didn’t want to adopt David,” spilled a source. “He felt like they should focus on their marriage, because they were having problems then, too. But Madonna insisted. And what Madonna wants, Madonna gets.” And close pals have revealed that Madonna’s decision to press ahead with another adoption – of three-year-old Malawian girl, Mercy James, hit their recent reconciliation attempts “like a sledgehammer”.
Her exercising obsession
Madonna is said to have put her daily four-hour workout regimes over spending time with Guy.
The director apparently told close pals, hugging his wife was like “cuddling up to a piece of gristle”. With the source adding, “He got more and more frustrated as she spent nearly half the day working out.”
And insiders have also revealed that the married couple didn’t make love for 18 months – “Guy was pleading with her to spend more time with him but she wouldn’t.”
Wants a baby with Alex Rodriguez
Madonna’s relationship with US baseball star Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez, 33, has already caused the athlete to split from his wife for six years, Cynthia. And pals of the singer say she is now closer than ever to the 33-year-old New York Yankee player – and even wants to have a child with him!
“She thinks he’s physically a great specimen,” spilled a friend. “And if she is going to have another child, he would be the ideal man to bring one to her.”
“A-Rod and Madonna are more involved than ever,” said a source.
Guy has never been as involved in the religion as Madonna, and friends say it was his refusal to get involved that angered the star.
“Guy’s initial support and interest in Kabbalah turned to annoyance and hatred,” said an insider. “He thinks it’s hokum.”
And his stance is at odds with Madge’s, who has declared, “Kabbalah helped me stand up and take responsibility for everything to do with me.” While Guy’s pals say he screamed at Madge, “[Kabbalah’s] made you worse, you selfish cow!”
Madonna’s people have claimed Guy’s “tightwad” ways contributed to the breakdown of the marriage.
“If he’s meant to be worth millions, then Madonna’s never seen a penny of it,” a source told The Sun. “He’s never contributed towards the running of the family.”
But pals of the director have slammed the allegations, insisting that Guy, who is worth Dhs160 million doesn’t want any of his wife’s cash.
The divorce of the decade: your questions answered!
Q: What will happen to Lourdes, Rocco and David?
A: Sources are agreed that as the mother, Madonna is likely to be awarded custody, and that she’ll move the family to New York. “Guy wants 50-50 custody,” said a pal of the director. “He’s devoted to Rocco and wants him to spend half of the year with him and half with Madonna.” Adding that when it comes to Lourdes and David, “He figures time with them will be limited.”
Q: Who ended it with who?
A: “Guy is responsible for wanting this divorce now,” insisted an insider, who added that the director was done with the “charade” of the marriage. “He didn’t want to wait to break the news, it had gone on long enough. This marriage was over a long time ago.” And another added, “Guy has been the one who has come to the conclusion that enough is enough.
Q: Will Guy get any of her money?
A: Guy has reportedly told his lawyers that he didn’t want “one penny” of Madge’s Dhs2 billion fortune. However, Team Madonna has apparently attempted to smear Guy, with a friend of the singer saying, “[Madonna said] ‘I’m totally devastated that Guy’s turned out to be such a gold-digger. He’s just after my money.’” But insiders are agreed that Guy will get to keep the Wiltshire mansion, the London pub and the cash equivalent of their London properties.
Q: To what extent is Alex Rodriguez involved?
A: Pals have called the break-up “a long time coming”, but add that Madonna’s relationship with Alex is “spiritual, emotional and romantic”.
“Madonna is getting increasingly close to Alex,” said a source. “They are ringing each other all the time. Guy knows what’s happening, but Madonna doesn’t want Alex named in the divorce, so she’ll keep a lid on things until the financial side of the split is worked out.”
Q: What are Madge and Guy’s main differences?
A: “Madonna was desperate to add to her family and we felt she was sizing up Guy as a possible dad,” a friend said. “Then they accidentally fell in love – but most of us could see they were too different to last.” And insiders say the pair’s lifestyle were just too different for them to carry on. “Madonna’s friends… had Guy down as a bit of a boozing Brit, who is always hanging about with his mates,” said one. Whilst another added that Guy had no interest in Kabbalah or following the strict macrobiotic diets that Madge did.
