She was reportedly planning to make her return to the spotlight at a glitzy gala event after over a month in hiding, avoiding the celebrity world, but Kim Kardashian’s comeback plans following her traumatic Paris robbery were thwarted when her husband, Kanye West, was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital over fears for the state of his mental health.
The outspoken rapper, known for his controversial comments, was taken for a psychiatric evaluation on Monday 21 November after he reportedly started behaving “erratically” while at his personal trainer’s home. According to TMZ, Kanye has been suffering from depression, and his mental health was pushed to breaking point due to working overtime on his fashion line, his new album and his tour, which has now been cancelled. Also said to be receiving treatment for exhaustion and sleep deprivation, he was forced to spend Thanksgiving in hospital.
Kanye’s medical emergency came just hours after all remaining dates on his Saint Pablo Tour were axed. Insiders revealed that his rigorous touring schedule, combined with the stress of Kim’s robbery in Paris, contributed to his breakdown. A source told Entertainment Tonight: “It was a combination of a lot of issues: stress, anxiety, paranoia. He just broke. There have been signs recently of him just [being] overwhelmed. Kanye hasn’t been himself for a while.”
This time of the year is also said to be difficult for the 39-year-old performer as his mother Donda, with whom he was extremely close, died in November 2007 from complications stemming from plastic surgery procedures. A source said: “He keeps that pain internalised, but sometimes he will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November.”
Kim Halts Comeback
While Kanye begins his road to recovery, wife Kim is said to have been keeping a bedside vigil in the hospital. Sources close to the reality star said that she has “barely left Kanye’s side”, and told Us Weekly: “Kim has been very concerned and supportive. Seeing Kanye like this is scary for her.”
Her husband’s health scare came at a bad time for the 36-year-old, as she’d been planning on making her much-awaited return to the public eye after laying low since her robbery, where she was tied up and forced to hand over millions of dollars’ worth of jewellery to armed men. When Kanye was admitted to hospital, Kim was in New York preparing to attend the Angel Ball – which was honouring her late father Robert Kardashian – along with her mother Kris Jenner and sisters, Khloé and Kourtney. However, upon hearing the news, she jetted straight back to Los Angeles to be with her partner and father to her two children, North, three and Saint, 11 months.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star’s role as nurse is similar to her sister Khloé’s behaviour when her ex-husband Lamar Odom was recovering from a near-fatal overdose last year. A source said: “All the Kardashian women stick by their men.”
Kanye’s mental state is said to be so worrying that his insurance policy for the 21 cancelled dates on his tour is likely to cover him for lost profits due to illness. Even his famous friends have expressed their concerns for him. The day after he was admitted to hospital, John Legend, said: “I was concerned by what I saw, so hopefully he’s getting some rest and some time to figure things out.”
Though they were one-time BFFs, Kanye and Jay Z have grown apart in recent years and Kanye has been voicing some less-than-positive comments about both Jay and wife Beyoncé. However, Kanye’s old friends are said to be keen to patch things up following his hospital stint. According to the UK’s The Sun, Jay and Beyoncé hope to reconnect with the Stronger rapper “quietly and in private, to avoid any media storm, but just to let him know they are there for him”.
While Kanye’s antics have upset so many, his famously erratic behaviour may well be the result of his illness, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
