He says it is because they're written better

Idris Elba recently played the super-powered villain Brixton Lore in the high-octane Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, and has also taken on roles as Macavity the Mystery Cat in Cats and an as yet unnamed baddie in the upcoming sequel, The Suicide Squad.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the world premiere of Cats in New York on Monday December 16, Idris explained what attracts him to darker characters.

"Bad guys are just written better," he explained. "They're just less boring, they get to say all the stuff that's in their head, and then you get to do it with charisma."

However, he insisted Macavity isn't necessarily evil - just "desperate", explaining: "Macavity has one life left out of all his nine...

"(Director) Tom Hooper and I, we wanted to bring that out. So he's not just like a bad guy, he's a desperate guy."

Meanwhile, Idris confessed he's loving working with James Gunn on The Suicide Squad, gushing: "I'm filming it right now as we speak, so I can't even talk about it, but I'm really excited to be a part of the squad.

"It's a great team... James Gunn is an incredible director to work with, and the actors are amazing, so I'm having a great time."

Cats hits theatres on 20 December. The Suicide Squad is expected to debut in 2021.
