Hot 100 2011 - Lucy Bruce
Founder and director of Harmony House, a day shelter for destitute children in India, and partner of Insignia, a bespoke brand communications agency, one wonders how this no-nonsense mum-of-two, manages to juggle so many balls in the air. The loyal, down-to-earth Brit claims she owes most of her success to her husband, Gaurav Sinha, who she met in Dubai 10 years ago. “He’s my biggest inspiration. He never ceases to amaze me with his generosity, loyalty and compassion and he always pushes me to do the right thing.”
Lucy set up Insignia with her husband back in 2003 and then financed Harmony House in 2009. They now provide over 170 destitute children based in Delhi with education, nutrition, medication, clothes, hygiene facilities and, most importantly, love and care.
Even though Lucy always fantasised about living in Dubai as a teenager, after seeing a TV documentary about the emirate, she didn’t believe she’d ever end up living here. “There are so many special moments for me in the UAE. I have achieved so many milestones here. It’s a place where everyone is welcome and accepted, and dreams can easily become reality.”
This year, Lucy hopes to grow and expand Harmony House even more, with branches in other destitute areas around the world. “I’ve received a lot of support for Harmony House and there’s been an amazing network of people around me. I feel that when a good idea takes root there’s an incredible force that helps you move ahead.”
