A helicopter with two people on board has crashed while taking off from The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai on Wednesday 22 January evening.
Two people are said to have been injured and taken to hospital by police helicopter. One is thought to have been the pilot.
One Ahlan! reader, Paula Kaki, said: "I was having lunch at Nasimi beach when a helicopter crash landed minutes before 4pm. Instead of landing on the helipad, the helicopter crashed on the parking lot nearby. We heard a loud noise and rushed to the scene, where we saw the helicopter's blades still spinning. The pilot sustained serious head injuries, the other passengers seemed alright."
Dubai Media Office tweeted: "A private helicopter with two people on board has crashed while taking off from Palm Jumeirah, they sustained moderate to critical injuries."
It is not known where those on board were from, nor is it yet not exactly where the incident happened on the island, but residents in the area reported seeing emergency services rush to the scene, as well as long tailbacks.
Social media sites also started carrying reports from eyewitnesses from around 4.30pm.
@SurenaChande tweeted: WOAH! Can't believe there's been a helicopter crash on the palm. I was wondering why there were ambulances, fire engines etc going past.
