Q: We like to spend the weekend on the beach, but the cafés only seem to serve burgers. What healthy snacks can we pack to take with us? Leigh, 27
A Before you set out for a day at the beach, it’s always smart to plan ahead and pack some tasty food to bring along. On Thursday night, put some grapes and blueberries in the freezer, as these make nutritious, refreshing treats.
Then in the morning, slice some carrots, cucumbers and celery and pack them in cold water with some lemon slices. Throw in a dip, either almond butter, tomato salsa, plain greek yogurt or hummus. To make sure that you don’t succumb to the burgers, prepare a turkey and reduced-fat yellow cheese sandwich on wholegrain wrap with sliced veggies, and apple slices with 100 per cent peanut butter on a wholewheat bread. The peanut butter and turkey and cheese will provide some protein and the apples and fresh veggies will add some extra water content. Pack plenty of drinks and leave those salty packs of nuts at home, as these will dehydrate you. - HALA
