Happy New Year, Qatar!

Happy New Year, Qatar!

02 Jan 2014

We welcomed 2014 in grand style all over Doha, from the top class Under the Stars concert at the Grand Hyatt to the Hed Kandi DJ dance party at InterContinental Doha the City

What a start to the New Year! New Year's Eve was definitely a night to remember in Doha, as dozens of parties kicked off across town to celebrate the start of 2014 with a bang.

The Under the Stars party at the Grand Hyatt Doha was a truly glam affair. The sold-out event featured a lively performance by charismatic British swing singer Matthew vanKan and his band, who flew over from London for the occasion. Following the concert and a lavish buffet dinner al fresco, guests boogied into the wee hours with the Hyatt’s resident DJ Santiago, who had a ball spinning the decks from the rooftop.

Guests had the chance to win fabulous prizes in a Best Dressed competition, judged by a panel that included Ahlan! Qatar Editor Dawn Gibson, Grand Hyatt General Manager Christoph K Franzen, top London tailor Richard James (who dressed vanKan for the concert), Nicholas Chrisostomou from event organiser Coco Latté and Trinity Talent Qatar’s Junita Hughes.

Student and part-time model Jennifer Dyer won Best Dressed Lady in a long printed dress with an embellished jewel collar by Qatar designer Layla Asgar Siyabi (LAS Fashion), while pilot Lorne McCallum’s suit from a tailor in the Doha Souq won him Best Dressed Guy. Both winners received a voucher for a deluxe two night weekend stay at the Grand Hyatt Doha.

Julien Periard and Monika Figelova also impressed the judges with their outfits, a custom-made suit from Thailand and a dress bought in Slovakia respectively, snaring the grand prize of a two night stay at the Grand Hyatt Dubai with flights provided by Emirates.

Across the city, party people were out in full force for celebrations that ranged from all-night dance parties to upmarket dinner and drinks affairs.

The dance crowd gravitated to the Hed Kandi party at InterContinental Doha the City, which featured non-stop entertainment from international and local DJs across two rooms, as well as the New Year’s Eve countdown at The Globe, the Silver-themed party at the Doha Marriott’s Pearl Lounge and the Ibiza Pacha dance party at Club 7.

The 1920s themed Great Gatsby party at the W Doha was hugely popular. Girls dressed in their best flapper beads and fringed dresses while guys donned vintage-style suits to dance to a 14-piece show band flown in from Atlanta.
