Hair loss has become an increasingly common problem for those living in extreme climates such as the Gulf’s searing heat. One of the most obvious culprits behind your thinning tresses seems to be the desalinated water. The tap water in the UAE is hard and contains lots of chlorine, which can cause your hair to weaken and consequently fall out. Secondly, the weather is a highly aggravating factor – hot and sweaty conditions mean we need to was our hair almost every day, and shampooing too often can strip the scalp of its natural oils and cause dehydration. Lastly, the constant exposure to the sun, air conditioning and the chlorine found in both tap water and swimming pools plays a massive role in damaging your hair’s health. But there is hope – consuming the right kinds of nutrients, ensuring you get adequate sleep and maintaining a stable mental balance will boost your hair’s wellbeing. Sadly, the hectic pace of UAE life can be hugely demanding, with stress a common problem for us all, and our poor hair has to bear the brunt of it! Mike Ryan, Trichologist and Brand Expert at CLEAR Arabia, gives us the lowdown on hair fall and reveals why plain water is the cure! 

“Some of the main causes of hair fall for women include pregnancy, dieting, weight loss, heat and stress. A healthy diet and a high water intake help to keep the hair healthy and therefore limits the hair fall we experience. Drinking at least two litres of water a day is essential as it helps to keep the skin and hair hydrated. Water acts as a natural vitamin, restoring the goodness in your scalp. Avoiding too much salt and food with a high fat content, and keeping your diet [balanced] will also help in keeping your hair thicker.”

Reasons for hair loss 

Excessive Stress

The stress caused by demanding workloads and hectic social lives has been found to retard hair growth and increase the rate of hair loss.

Excessive use of Heat

Overuse of hot tools such as straighteners and curling tongs can cause irreversible damage to your hair, so give your tresses a rest. When you do use them, make sure you add heat protection products beforehand.


In hot countries like the UAE, the scalp often tends to dry out, causing dandruff, which in turn causes the hair to fall out. Make sure you wash and condition your hair every couple of days to maintain a healthy scalp.

Constant Exposure to the Sun

Exposure to the sun, pollution and dust without proper protection makes the hair dry and limp.
