She certainly has a colourful past when it comes to her private life, with former boyfriends including Luke Wilson, Scott Speedman and Bryan Adams, but undoubtedly Gwyneth Paltrow’s most famous exes are Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck. The normally private Shakespeare in Love actress has uncharacteristically spilled the beans on her time with the two superstars and has also opened up about that fight in the elevator between Jay Z and his sister-in-law, Solange.

Brad Was Too Good for her
In a candid new chat with US radio host Howard Stern, Gwyneth Paltrow spoke of her romances with Brad, 51, and Ben, 42, insisting that one was too good for her and that the other was “not in a good place” while they were dating. The actress, who split from her husband Chris Martin last year, insists she had no right to romance the ridiculously good-looking Pitt, but admits she was besotted with her former fiancé. “I definitely fell in love with him,” she gushed. “He was so gorgeous and sweet. I mean, he was Brad Pitt! But I was such a kid – I was 22 when we met.”  Gwyneth added: “It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my a**. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old. I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me. I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Paltrow and Pitt met on the set of Se7en in 1995 and dated for almost three years, the same length of time as her romance with Affleck in the late Nineties. Gwyn’s sweet words will almost certainly be a boost to Brad’s confidence (not that he needs it), but the same sadly cannot be said for bad ex-boyfriend Ben. Gwynnie admits she doesn’t have as many fond memories about that coupling and basically suggested that the Gone Girl actor was more concerned with superficial looks than substance. “He wasn’t in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend,” she revealed. “I think that when you’re in your twenties, you can get swept up. When you’re a kid, you tend to be more shallow and you’re also immature, so you think that being with a good-looking person validates yourself in some kind of way.” The personality pounding of Affleck went further when Gwyn admitted her parents weren’t convinced Affleck was the guy for her. “I think they appreciated how he’s super-intelligent and he’s really talented and funny. They loved him, but they were OK with us not being together,” she said.

Forever Friends
Paltrow also revealed that despite her separation from Coldplay rocker Chris, she’s still extremely close to Beyoncé and Jay Z. The Crazy in Love duo aren’t her closest celeb mates, but she still reached out to them when news erupted about Jay Z and Solange Knowles’s fight in a lift.

Gwyneth said: “My best famous friend is Cameron Diaz. Jay and Bey are my others. They’re the greatest people. They’re funny and sweet, and self-aware and really intelligent.” Speaking specifically about when Bey and Jay faced marriage struggles, she said: “If any of my friends have anything like that, I call right away. If someone’s clearly going through something, I always go straight for it.”
