Gwyneth Paltrow Gathers Halle Berry and More for Stand Up to Cancer Telethon
Gwyneth Paltrow and her celebrity friends teamed up on Friday night 5 September to support Stand Up To Cancer, a charity that raises donations for the research new therapies against the disease.
The Hollywood beauty, 41, co-produced the fundraiser held at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre bringing in a host of famous names including Mike Myers, Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston.
While Iron Man himself couldn't attend the event, Robert Downey Jr. sent in a video message showing his support next to Matthew McConaughey and Bradley Cooper in a comical, pre-recorded cancer awareness public service announcement.
The most touching speech of the night came from former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, who spoke about losing both his wife and step daughter to the disease. Speaking at event he said: "To watch someone you love have his or her life eaten away, bit by bit, by this insidious disease, that kind of sorrow becomes an indelible part of your psyche.
"I held the generous, strong, beautiful hand of my first wife, Cassie, as ovarian cancer took her life much too soon. And just last year, I held the hand of my funny, wonderful daughter Charlotte before she too died from this wretched, inherent disease."
Colombian actress Sofia Vergara gave a moving speech about her battle with thyroid cancer, asking audience members to shine a light for loved ones battling the disease as she and Kevin Bacon introduced the closing performance of Remission, featuring Lupe Fiasco, Common and superstar Jennifer Hudon.
