A gunman tried to take a Dubai-bound plane hostage
A gunman who tried to hijack a Dubai-bound flight from Dhaka, the capitaal of Bangladesh, has been shot dead.
The 25-year-old man, named only as Mahadi, tried to hijack a Bangladesh Airlines flight using a fake gun. He used the weapon to take a crew member hostage while also demanding to speak with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, according to reports.
The flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Chittagong, before commandos moved in and shot Mahadi dead. All the 142 passengers and the crew are safe.
Kusum Dewan, additional commissioner of Chittagong police, said the man 'appeared to be mentally imbalanced.'
During the hijacking the man had claimed to have a gun and a bomb, though the gun turned out to be a toy and no explosives were found on him.
