Go Go Organic
Finally, there's more veggies with a bit of dirt on them (and we mean that in the healthiest way possible!) We're thrilled to see the expansion of organic produce markets in the UAE. This means fantastic, regionally grown alternatives to the artificial-looking fruit and veg that's travelled half-way across the world.
Farmer's market finds a new home
The Farmer's Market on the Terrace, in association with Jumeirah Emirates Towers, is back for the fourth season, having relocated from Souk Al Bahar. There's lots of fresh local and organic vegetables, herbs, eggs and fruit on sale from the likes of Al Shuwib Organic Farms, Down to Earth – Organic Foods and Baker & Spice. You can also pick up bread, cakes, honey, jam, beans, pulses and rice. Word is that fridges may soon be installed for goodies like cheese and ice cream. The market runs every Friday from 9am to 2pm on the terrace area outside the Godolphin Ballroom at Jumeirah Emirates Towers.
It's great to see government impetus behind this food movement in the way of Deira's Organic Produce Market, which is backed by the Dubai Municipality and the Ministry of Environment and Water. Launching with nine farms, the initiative is a win-win; providing local farmers with a low-cost platform to sell their produce and consumers with healthy local fruit and veg. The market (next to Deira Fish Market) is open every Friday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
It keeps on growing
So far this year, we've also seen gourmet grocery store, Blue Planet Green People launch a farmers' market in JLT (Al Seef 2, Cluster U) and Ripe expand to Le Gourmet Café along Jumeirah Beach Road, while the Dubai Garden Centre (Al Marabea exit, Sheikh Zayed Road) now carries a selection of organic fruit, veg and herbs.
