Glee Star Cory Monteith Found Dead in Vancouver
Cory Monteith has died at the age of 31. The Glee star was found dead in a room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver, Canada. Cory's publicist Melissa Kates confirmed the news, saying, "We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss."
As per reports, Cory had checked into the hotel on 6 July and was expected to check out on Saturday (13 July). When he missed his checkout time, hotel staff went up to his room on the 21st floor, where they found him dead. Apparently, he had been dead for several hours.
No official cause of death has been given as yet although police Deputy Chief Doug LaPard has confirmed that there were no signs of foul play. It is suspected that a drug overdose could have been the reason.
Cory, who played Finn Hudson on Glee, had recently been in rehab and successfully completed a month in the programme. He had his girlfriend and Glee co-star Lea Michele's support through his time battling his addictions.
Cory had been open about his drink and drug habit in the past, revealing in 2011 that he had previously checked into rehab when he was 19 years old.
The actor, who was born in Canada, had also revealed in an interview with Parade magazine that his life spun "out of control" after he dropped out of high school at the age of 16. He'd said about his drug use at the time, "Anything and everything, as much as possible."
LePard's statement revealed about Cory's death, ""Shortly after noon today, the Vancouver Police received a call from the BC Ambulance Service regarding a sudden death in a room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel at 1038 Canada Place in downtown Vancouver. The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith, who achieved great fame on the popular TV series Glee."
"Mr Monteith checked into the hotel (on) July 6 and was due to check out of the room (on Saturday). There were others with Mr Monteith in his room earlier... but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died."
"We know there will be considerable interest in this case, and we have detectives assigned to the case who attended with our Forensic Identification Unit to examine the scene, to ensure to the extent possible that there are no unanswered questions," LaPard continued. "Hotel video has been secured as well as room access records. Our investigators have spoken with hotel staff, who are providing the utmost in cooperation."
He added, "On behalf of the Vancouver Police, I want to pass on our condolences to the family, friends, castmates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith. As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death."
Cory's autopsy is scheduled for Monday (15 July) and coroner Lisa Lapointe said, "We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death."
Our thoughts go out to Cory's family and friends at this time.
