A mammogram has shown that 36-year-old E! News showbiz anchor Giuliana Rancic has early-stage breast cancer.

For Rancic, who has suffered a series of devastating personal tragedies, the news has come as yet another crushing blow in a series of many.

Married to US Apprentice winner Bill Rancic, the couple have been unable to get pregnant and their failed attempts have been well documented on their E! reality show Giuliana and Bill, which has garnered thousands of fans moved by the couples' desperate struggle to have a child.

After receiving IVF and becoming pregnant, Giuliana's hopes were dashed after she miscarried. Her second IVF (in vitro fertilisation) attempt failed. After recently receiving a mammogram prior to her third IVF attempt Giuliana was told she has breast cancer and the IVF treatment could no longer be carried out.

Announcing the news on US breakfast show Today on Monday (17 October 2011), Rancic explained, "Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer... Sadly we've had to put that (IVF) off because of the news.

"It was just a kick in the stomach. And I knew something was wrong... That was definitely the hardest day. I went in to a hospital in LA and when they came in to tell me, they said it pretty quickly... they just said, 'I'm sorry, but you have breast cancer.' I just remember, it's what you would expect, but so much more. It was incredible instant sobbing and it was like the world just crashed down around me."

One of life's fighters, Giuliana added, "I still want this baby, because this baby has saved my life. I truly feel God was looking out after me. If I had gotten pregnant later down the line, I could have been a lot sicker."

The star will now undergo surgery followed by six weeks' of radiation therapy in a bid to beat the cancer.
