SHAPE TESTERS
Kat Finch, 24, loves boxing
Pat Sanchez Allport, 23, loves dancing
Jane Ostman King, mid 30s, loves circuit training
Kristi Arnold- Macpherson, mid 30s, loves triathlons

Painting

The night
Like any activity, painting burns calories, but on the health front it’s also a great way to destress too. We sent the SHAPE testers to Jam Jar in Al Quoz to paint a masterpiece of their own. They were each given a canvas and a variety of water colours, and then they set about creating a talking point for their homes.

Reader verdict
Jane: “I absolutely loved it! I would definitely do it again maybe with some more girl friends next time.”
Kristi: “It was a blast. I had no idea I could produce something somewhat visually appealing. It was something different to do that I wouldn’t have thought of.”

Rock climbing

The night
This top-to-toe workout puts every muscle to the test. The girls visited the climbing wall at the Quay Club, Mina A Salam and were shown by the instructors how to pull on the safety harness and hard hat and start climbing the wall. With a climbing wall session, you not only get a serious workout, but you get some bonding time as you swap notes about shaking knees and achy muscles as you take a time out after your climb.

Reader verdict
Pat: “I didn’t mind rock climbing, but I would rather pick up my dancing shoes on girls night out.”
Kat: “I mostly enjoyed the rock climbing as it is not something I would ever think of doing or know about. Was great fun, active and actually really hard work.”

Salsa

The night
The SHAPE testers put on their dancing shoes and joined in with a free salsa lesson at Blends in The Address Dubai Marina. With a session of salsa, they would be burning calories without realising. Led by professional dancer Aloy Junco, our testers started by learning the basic steps and then worked their way through a whole routine. By the end of the night they were given a serious workout

Reader verdict
Jane: “I had a lot of fun learning new moves, I loved the music and the atmosphere.”
Kristi: “It was heaps of fun. I have it in mind to round up the gals on a Wednesday night for part deux.”

Cooking class

The night
If you want to look after your body, you need to think about the fuel you put inside it. So our readers took part in a healthy eating cooking class at Balance Cooking School. In this light, airy, kitchen, Pat and Kat were treated to a demonstration by the chef from the Balance Cafe restaurant. They then attempted to create their own version of vegetable stew. And then after cooking their dish, they got to sample their culinary triumphs.

Reader verdict
Pat: “I loved the experience and I would definitely want to take some more cooking lessons.”
Kat: “It was different, but I’d rather stay active on a girls’ night."
